Barnes-Jewish Hospital is located at the western edge of the Washington University Medical Center complex.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the largest hospital in Missouri, is a result of the 1996 merger between Barnes Hospital and The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. Rated by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospitals in the country, Barnes-Jewish Hospital has a premier reputation in patient care, medical education, research and community service. The hospital has more than 169,000 inpatient admissions and outpatient surgery and emergency department visits each year from patients around the world.
As an affiliated teaching hospital of Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital has an 1,800-member medical staff that includes full-time academic faculty of the school, as well as private physicians. The medical staff is supported by a house staff of approximately 790 residents, interns and fellows, in addition to professional nurses and technicians, and service and support personnel. The hospital, which has 1,124 staffed beds, is a nonprofit institution and is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The South Campus is the largest campus in the medical complex and the center of residency training for the Department of Surgery. Most of the surgical faculty offices are located within the South Campus, as are the surgical laboratories. All high-intensity, complex surgical cases, along with related care, are carried out at the South Campus, which includes the new emergency and trauma center.
Next to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and connected by covered walkways, is Barnes-Jewish Hospital, North Campus. Residents in the general surgery training program rotate through the North Campus, and full-time faculty members based there supervise their activities. Most outpatient clinics, diagnostic and testing services, as well as cancer services, are now located on the North Campus.
Siteman Cancer Center
The $46-million Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center opened in 2001. This dedicated, state-of-the-art cancer care and research facility is part of the Center for Advanced Medicine. The Siteman Cancer Center is among the nation’s highest ranking cancer research and treatment institutions with a designation by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
All outpatient cancer services, including physician practice areas, an infusion center, radiation therapy, a clinical research office and a Cancer Information Center, are available in this single location designed to enhance patient convenience and comfort. Its staff includes more than 350 affiliated Washington University researchers and physicians aided by nursing, administrative and support staff. Each year, about 8,000 new cancer patients are seen at the Cancer Center. Faculty and staff at the Siteman Cancer Center also provide follow-up care for cancer survivors and offer more than 240 clinical trials.
