The Surgical Oncology Section is known internationally for advances in the research and treatment of medullary thyroid carcinoma and Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN) syndromes.

Washington University surgeons treat a large number of patients with thyroid and parathyroid problems.

Thyroid and parathyroid procedures include minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (partial or complete removal of the parathyroid glands) with the use of radionuclide mapping and intraoperative parathyroid hormone measurement. The section has experience with a large number of patients in reoperative thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

In the area of adrenal procedures, Washington University surgeons have made important contributions to the management of pheochromocytoma (a tumor of the adrenal gland) and pioneered the application of laparoscopic adrenalectomy (removal of one or both of the adrenal glands).
